Ask TBR: What’s a Good Sunday Date Spot?

I get so many random questions daily.  I’m convinced that my friends + family think I’m the go-to resource for restaurants + activities in DC.

Recently I was asked the following:

What’s a cool spot for an afternoon date on a Sunday?  Somewhere fun and hip and preferably with a rooftop, and maybe music.  Doesn’t have to be bougie, but not too shoddy either.

Madiana, Washington, DC

It was quite a task to meet all of her requirements, but I was up for the challenge!  Since she didn’t want a restaurant that was too bougie I opted for options that were a little more relaxed and could easily transition from a brunch atmosphere to a happy hour environment.

Here were my suggestions:

Masa 14

1825 14th St. NW

Washington, DC

Masa 14 was my top pick for a Sunday date spot.  The Asian-Fusion restaurant offers a $39 unlimited brunch from 10-3pm, which also includes an unlimited selection of brunch drinks such as Bacon Bloody Mary’s, Traditional Mimosas, Lemon Lagers, my personal favorite, Lychee Bellinis + more!

The best part about this spot is that they have a Sunday happy hour that begins right after the brunch ends.  Honestly you could ditch the brunch + just go for their cheap happy hour!  Drinks such as margaritas + mojitos are only $5 and their bar food, which includes Bahn Mi Burgers, Wok-Seared Edamame, Bengal Rolls + more, ranges from $4-7.

On top of the deals, they also have a fab rooftop where you can sip on your cocktail + enjoy the company of your date!  Whether you’re visiting for brunch or happy hour, Masa 14 doesn’t disappoint!

Ambar

523 8th St. SE

Washington, DC

My first visit to Ambar was for a birthday brunch for my good friend Roxy.  The restaurant specializes in Balkan fare, and since that’s not my go-to cuisine I wasn’t sure if I would actually enjoy it.  I was pleasantly surprised when everything I ordered from the menu was delicious!

They offer a $39 unlimited brunch menu of small plates which includes Nutella waffles (with or without strawberries), Salmon or Prosciutto Omelettes, Meat Pies + more. They also have a selection of brunch drinks such as the Ambar Mimosa (made w/ peach + lavender puree), Mango Mimosa, Bloody Mary, to name a few.  My personal favorite is the Ambar Mimosa–it’s soooo good!

An added plus is their beautiful outdoor patio space. It gives you a great indoor/outdoor feel + is a perfect spot for meeting with date…or friends!

Lost Society

2001 14th St. NW

Washington, DC

Lastly, I chose Lost Society because it is positioned right in the 14th St. Corridor.  It’s a great location to bounce around if you’re in the mood for hitting more than one spot when you’re out.  The restaurant offers American fare, and their specialties are steak + seafood.  They offer a per-plate brunch from 11:30-4:00pm, which includes drink specials such as $10 Bottomless Mimosas + $4 Blood Mary’s.

My boyfriend dubs it the “Vampire Spot” because of its dark walls, eccentric decor + chandeliers.  It definitely gives off a ‘True Blood’ vibe.  Most importantly they have an outdoor rooftop where guests can dine or enjoy cocktails.

After careful consideration she opted for Masa 14–my #1 pick!

I can’t wait to hear all about her experience!
